My name is John Chaffee (Mdiv, ThM), I was trained to be a pastor but just couldn’t fit into the mold expected of me… thank goodness!
I believe Jesus envisioned all of us having person-to-person conversations of depth, vulnerability, and mystery… all while grounded in the best of the broad and deep Christian spiritual tradition. Strangely enough, these things are not always found in the conventional, organized ways of practicing religion and faith.
So, I decided to step out in faith on Jan. 1st, 2022, and do what I can to offer creative opportunities, projects, talks, writings, podcasts, cohorts, and retreats for people to grow, learn, and do spiritual formation for themselves.
To some, I am their spiritual director or post-conventional pastor. To others, I am a professor or public theologian. Use whatever title you like for me; I want to help you to grow in health and holiness.
Over my 20+ years of professional ministry, I worked in a variety of churches, led and participated in literally hundreds of retreats, was mentored through church dysfunction, hiked the Appalachian Trail in 2015 to rebuild and rediscover myself, reread the Christian mystics, shifted from theological work to the world of Christian spirituality, taught at the college and seminary level, and even more recently taught theology in the Philly prison system.
For those who are interested, I received a degree in Biblical Studies from Eastern University (2006), then received my MDiv from Palmer Seminary (2013), and then completed my ThM from Princeton Theological Seminary (2020). I have also self-published five books, all available now on Amazon.
I hope our paths cross and that, at least right now, I can help you get to the next stage of your life of faith.
Much love,
John.
